I am a sound artist and independent radio producer. I spent years as a visual artist (BFA, Massachusetts College of Art, 1975) before “sound” caught my ear. My sound works have aired on National Public Radio and on many stations across the United States. I am currently working on my third sound installation.
I have given many workshops in audio production to artists, producers and students. This includes: at California State University Media Production, at Concordia University, Montreal at a women and sound technology conference, at Maine College of Art, at several Audubon Society’s for my recordings of bird sounds, and at Bridgewater College Theater Arts in Virginia.
For over ten years, I have been a member of the teaching and production staff at the National Audio Theatre Festivals’ Audio Theatre Workshop. I teach digital audio editing and work with engineers to produce live radio theatre that is simultaneously broadcast. In 1991-92, I served as Chair of the Media Arts Advisory Panel at the Maine Arts Commission.
I teach Independent Study to audio engineering majors at the University of Maine at Augusta (since 2005) and I teach Radio Theater as a visiting artist. For over 15 years, I’ve worked in the media services department of the distance education network at the University. We broadcast classes, produce educational media and videotape lectures for online classes.
But my true passion is sound and my sound work.
Dianne Ballon is available for audio and radio theater workshops, and for audio engineering.
